Gamma Acquires Design Startup Lica to Launch AI Research Lab

Presentation platform Gamma has acquired Lica, an Accel-backed startup specializing in AI-driven design, to accelerate the development of its new research division. Co-founders Priyaa Kalyanaraman and Purvanshi Mehta will join Gamma to lead the effort, transitioning from their work on automated marketing videos to broader visual communication research.

Founded in 2023, Lica gained traction by converting screenshots and recordings into structured project presentations. The startup previously secured $4 million in funding from investors including Accel, South Park Commons, and Village Global. The acquisition stems from a long-standing relationship between the founders and Gamma CEO Lee Grant, as both companies shared common institutional backers.

Gamma, which recently hit a $2.1 billion valuation, intends to move beyond standard presentation formats to explore interactive, multimodal communication. While the company has not outlined specific product launches, the new division will focus on customizing AI models to adapt presentation styles for diverse audiences. This consolidation follows a broader trend in the AI design space, mirroring recent moves like OpenAI’s acquisition of NextSlide as competition for visual communication tools intensifies.
