BECU and DNA&STONE Challenge the Banking Definition of 'Free'

Consumers have long treated the word 'free' with healthy skepticism, conditioned by years of hidden fees and fine-print traps. Now, Washington credit union BECU is leaning into that cynicism with a new campaign, 'Free on the Street,' designed to prove that their checking accounts actually lack the expected catches.

BECU and DNA&STONE Challenge the Banking Definition of 'Free'

The campaign, developed by the agency DNA&STONE, uses a comedic approach to highlight everyday situations where 'free' is promised but rarely delivered. By contrasting these common frustrations with a straightforward financial product—free checking with no monthly maintenance fees—the firms aim to rebuild trust through transparency. Matt McCain of DNA&STONE noted that the work centers on a 'human version of the truth,' arguing that consumers pay closer attention when brands strip away polished marketing jargon.

For BECU, the strategy serves as a departure from traditional financial advertising. Felicia Lipson, VP of Acquisition Marketing, stated that the credit union intends to remind members that banking can be simpler and more honest. The campaign, which includes 15 and 30-second spots, will run across broadcast, CTV, radio, and digital channels. This initiative follows a strong year for the agency, which was named Ad Age Small Agency of the Year in 2025.
