Ring Shifts to Rotating Encryption Keys for Cloud Features
Amazon’s smart home brand Ring is debuting a new encryption standard dubbed TAKE, or Throw Away the Key Encryption. By rotating keys stored briefly in the cloud, the company aims to balance advanced video processing features with user privacy, moving away from a reliance on traditional end-to-end encryption models.

Ring maintains that users retain ultimate control, noting that they can recover account access through passkeys, secondary devices, or proximity authentication near their hardware. While TAKE will become the global default starting in September, the company confirms that customers may still opt for traditional end-to-end encryption. This rollout arrives as Ring faces heightened scrutiny regarding data privacy, including a recent class-action lawsuit challenging the company's handling of facial recognition data via its Familiar Faces feature.
