New Data Links Consistent Exercise to Better Sleep Quality

People who never exercise face a sleep debt nearly an hour longer than those who stay active, according to the latest Sleep Uncovered report from Mattress Firm. The study suggests that physical activity and quality rest operate as a mutually reinforcing cycle, directly impacting athletic performance and daily motivation.

New Data Links Consistent Exercise to Better Sleep Quality

The report, developed with SleepScore Labs, reveals that sedentary individuals carry an average sleep debt of two hours and 41 minutes. In contrast, occasional and frequent exercisers report significantly lower deficits, at one hour and 33 minutes and one hour and 28 minutes, respectively. Among the 400 U.S. adults surveyed, 86% of active participants confirmed that poor sleep led to a measurable decline in their athletic performance, manifesting as reduced focus, lower motivation, and increased recovery time.

Beyond general trends, the research tested the impact of personalized sleep systems on eight athletes. By upgrading their mattresses and pillows through the company's MattressMatcher tool, participants saw their average time spent awake after falling asleep drop from 49 minutes to 32 minutes. Additionally, deep sleep duration increased from 17% to 21%. Despite these benefits, many respondents admitted to poor sleep hygiene, with 80% engaging in stimulating screen time or study before bed at least once a week, and over a third reporting physical discomfort from their current bedding.
