Hippo Scales Homeowners Insurance to 22 States

Hippo Holdings is aggressively expanding its homeowners insurance footprint, moving from eight states to 22 by the fourth quarter. The San Jose-based insurer is leveraging a revamped underwriting platform and new national distribution partnerships to target markets where it can secure profitable growth rather than following a traditional geographic rollout.

After a two-year pivot toward rigorous underwriting and internal technology upgrades, the company is now prepared to move beyond its previous focus on newly built homes. The expansion includes Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

President and CEO Rick McCathron noted that the firm is no longer tethered to fixed expansion maps. Instead, the team evaluates distribution opportunities on a case-by-case basis, deploying capital only when the underlying economics align with their risk standards. This agility is supported by an engineering infrastructure that allows the firm to launch in new states with 70% less labor than its initial rollout.

Technological efficiency has also shortened the feedback loop for risk management. Hippo can now deploy new underwriting rules in days rather than weeks, utilizing AI-assisted inspections to monitor geographic exposure. This strategy complements a broader portfolio shift that saw homeowners insurance represent 22% of gross written premiums in the second quarter. With a 61% year-over-year increase in gross written premiums reaching $482 million, the company is betting that its data-driven discipline will sustain momentum as it enters these 14 new markets.
