The procedure, conducted in August by Dr. Hassan R. Mir, utilized the FDA-cleared hardware to address intricate bone disruptions. Dr. Mir, who serves as a professor at the University of South Florida and director of orthopaedic trauma research at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute, helped design the system alongside Smith+Nephew. The technology provides a specialized array of plates and screws intended to improve surgical efficiency and anatomical restoration in patients ranging from accident victims to elderly individuals with fall-related injuries.

Dr. Roy Sanders, chief of the TGH Orthopaedic Institute, noted that the successful integration of this device into the operating room highlights the collaborative power of academic medicine. By moving the system from development to clinical application, the partnership aims to streamline technically demanding surgeries and potentially shorten recovery times. Following this inaugural success in Tampa, the system is expected to see wider distribution across U.S. health systems and global markets, offering surgeons more granular control when treating high-stakes pelvic trauma.
