At TechBBQ, Europe Questions Who Truly Holds the AI Reins

Amidst the hum of Copenhagen’s TechBBQ, European founders and investors moved past the excitement of what AI can build to a more uncomfortable inquiry: who actually controls the infrastructure. With the continent currently reliant on U.S. and Chinese models, the conference centered on the urgent necessity of digital sovereignty.

At TechBBQ, Europe Questions Who Truly Holds the AI Reins

The sentiment was crystallized by the recent unavailability of Anthropic’s Mythos and Fable models to European users, a disruption that forced many startups to confront the fragility of renting their core technology. Ellen de Brever, head of partnerships at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Cellerator, noted that the discourse shifted from machine capability to human accountability. She argued that the current era of AI agents is not a narrative of machines gaining independence, but one of humans choosing what to surrender.

This tension between innovation and control permeated the event, from discussions on privacy to the economic impact of an agentic workforce. Signal President Meredith Whittaker warned that the integration of AI into operating systems creates a massive data collection apparatus, often masking the long-term collateral consequences of such widespread surveillance. Meanwhile, Stability AI co-founder Emad Mostaque offered a starker assessment, suggesting that in a future where AI governs essential functions, national sovereignty will depend entirely on who holds the keys to the underlying models. While the panels tackled the existential risks of automation, the event served as a reminder that the most durable connections—even in a tech-focused ecosystem—remain those forged in person, away from the influence of the algorithms.
