The rebranding signals a strategic transition for the organization as it moves its core SRPK1 inhibitor technology through the clinical pipeline. By focusing on the fovea—the eye region essential for sharp, detailed vision—the company underscores its commitment to preventing vision loss in diabetic patients. CEO Olav Hellebø noted that while the firm built its reputation on foundational science, the current mission is to ensure those innovations reach the clinic.

Exonate Rebrands as Foventa Therapeutics to Target Diabetic Eye Disease
Drawing its name from the fovea, the Cambridge-based ophthalmology firm formerly known as Exonate is pivoting toward clinical delivery. The company, now operating as Foventa Therapeutics, aims to shift from discovery science to patient-centered care with its lead candidate, FOV407, a topical eye drop for non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

FOV407 functions by acting on the VEGF pathway, a primary driver of diabetic eye disease. Selected from over 1,000 synthesized molecules for its retinal penetrant properties, the treatment offers a non-invasive alternative to current standards. Chairman Rafiq Hasan stated that the company has reached a critical juncture, evolving into a focused business with a clear path toward a Phase IIb study. This upcoming trial, designed following a Type C meeting with the US Food and Drug Administration, seeks to address the significant population currently lacking effective treatment options for the early stages of diabetic retinopathy.
