California Graduates Affirm Degree Value Beyond Salary

Three-quarters of California bachelor's degree holders believe their education justifies the cost, prioritizing career advancement and professional readiness over immediate financial returns. A joint survey from BestColleges and National University reveals that while earnings remain vital, graduates view their degrees through a broader lens of long-term stability.

California Graduates Affirm Degree Value Beyond Salary

The study, which surveyed 1,006 residents who graduated between 2016 and 2021, highlights a nuanced disconnect between traditional economic metrics and personal satisfaction. Arts, Humanities, and Design graduates reported the highest value perception at 76%, despite typically facing lower earnings compared to other sectors. Conversely, Healthcare graduates demonstrated the swiftest transition into the workforce, with 65% securing employment within six months and 52% of full-time workers earning at least $100,000.

Despite high employment rates—93% of respondents currently hold jobs—the reality of financial pressure persists. Sixty-one percent of graduates expressed anxiety over covering basic expenses during the past year, and two-thirds acknowledged that further training or education is likely required to reach their long-term financial goals. BestColleges Editorial Director Taína Cuevas noted that the data proves a degree's worth is not defined by salary alone, but by how well an institution prepares students for the complexities of their chosen fields. The report suggests that universities could bridge lingering gaps by expanding paid internships and providing sustained career services long after commencement.
