Consumers Energy Launches Digital Verification Tool for Field Crews

Residents in southeast Michigan and surrounding regions can now verify the legitimacy of utility workers through a new online portal. By inputting an address into the Crew Check platform, customers gain access to vehicle identification details, providing a digital safeguard against unauthorized access to their properties during natural gas upgrades.

Consumers Energy Launches Digital Verification Tool for Field Crews

The tool, accessible at CrewCheck.ConsumersEnergy.com, displays vehicle identification and license plate numbers for authorized crews operating in the immediate vicinity. LeeRoy Wells, Jr., president of gas delivery at Consumers Energy, described the initiative as a move to bolster community trust and security. By providing real-time data on active projects, the company aims to reduce uncertainty for homeowners who might otherwise be wary of strangers arriving in marked utility vehicles.

While the system covers broad geographic areas including Flint, Jackson, Lansing, and Kalamazoo, it does not provide specific street-level addresses to maintain privacy. The company noted that the digital verification may not apply to certain third-party contractors or instances where vehicle location data remains restricted. For those requiring additional confirmation, the utility maintains a 24-hour verification line at 1-800-760-3295 to authenticate personnel identity.
