Uber Cuts 3,300 Jobs to Simplify Corporate Structure

A 10% reduction in global headcount marks a sharp pivot for Uber as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi moves to flatten the company’s management hierarchy. The layoffs, affecting 3,300 employees, aim to strip away layers of bureaucracy that accumulated during the ride-sharing giant’s rapid expansion into delivery and autonomous vehicle development.

The restructuring plan mandates a 20% cut to management roles, with some former leaders transitioning into individual contributor positions. Khosrowshahi’s internal directive emphasizes consolidating fragmented units, specifically merging engineering, science, and delivery divisions. By reducing teams with minimal staffing by half and eliminating roles positioned more than seven layers deep from the executive office, the company intends to increase agility across its restaurant, retail, and direct delivery operations.

Beyond personnel changes, Uber is effectively ending its remote work policy, restricting off-site arrangements to less than 1% of the workforce. Khosrowshahi attributed these sweeping organizational shifts to the complexity inherent in Uber's current scale, noting that internal structures that functioned during the company's startup phase now hinder efficiency. The company has yet to provide further comment on the transition, which follows a broader industry trend of tightening overhead costs to prioritize core profitability.
