Auto Financial Group Expands Balloon Lending Partnerships

With nearly one in five new-vehicle buyers facing monthly payments exceeding $1,000, Houston-based Auto Financial Group is expanding its reach. The firm added Sun Federal Credit Union and Wauna Federal Credit Union to its balloon lending program during the second quarter of 2026, targeting more affordable financing alternatives for consumers.

The addition of these two credit unions brings a combined $1.07 billion in assets to the network, extending the program’s availability to over 2 million potential members across two states. Wauna Credit Union CEO Robert Blumberg noted that the partnership allows the institution to offer its new Drive & Save program, aimed at lowering monthly costs for members who might otherwise be forced into extended, high-interest loan terms.

Auto Financial Group CEO Richard Epley emphasized that current market conditions, characterized by 84-month loan terms and record-high payments, are driving financial institutions toward residual-based financing. Unlike traditional long-term loans, the balloon lending model provides members the flexibility to surrender the vehicle at the end of the term rather than settling a final payment. The company continues to position these products as a way to maintain higher loan yields for lenders while providing a more manageable path to vehicle ownership for buyers.
