Sivers Semiconductors Commits $30M to Scale Glasgow Photonics Plant

Sivers Semiconductors is pouring 30 million USD into its Glasgow facility to ramp up production of Indium Phosphide lasers. As hyperscale operators race to build larger AI clusters, the Swedish firm aims to push annual output past 100 million units to meet the surging demand for high-speed optical networking hardware.

The expansion program, set to commence in the second half of 2026, marks a pivot toward a hybrid manufacturing strategy. By combining internal capacity with external foundry and packaging partnerships, Sivers intends to shift away from its previous fab-lite model. The facility is expected to reach operational status by the fourth quarter of 2027, integrating higher levels of automation and process flexibility to support the specialized needs of AI datacenters.

CEO Vickram Vathulya noted that the current infrastructure build-out has created unprecedented pressure on the optical supply chain. To maintain pace with volume production requirements, the company is prioritizing both capacity and supply chain resilience. COO Neeraj Chopra emphasized that this dual approach—leveraging the Glasgow site alongside Asian partners—provides the necessary agility to support customers as they transition from development to large-scale deployments of energy-efficient optical interconnects.
