Meta gambles on user trust with launch of Muse AI agent

Less than two weeks after finalizing an $18 billion settlement over social media harms, Meta has launched Muse, a personal AI agent that performs real-world tasks like booking travel and managing finances. The move marks the company’s most significant push into consumer AI, requiring unprecedented access to personal data.

Meta gambles on user trust with launch of Muse AI agent

Muse functions by integrating directly with a user’s digital ecosystem, including email, calendars, and payment platforms. Unlike previous chatbot iterations that served primarily as conversational tools, this agent is designed to execute actions, such as generating grocery lists from recipe reels or purchasing items via Stripe. Users maintain control through an opt-in model, connecting services individually to the agent. Powered by the Muse Spark model, the tool operates through a dedicated virtual machine called Muse Secure VM, which Meta asserts keeps data isolated from its advertising systems and prevents the agent from accessing raw passwords or payment credentials.

Despite these architectural safeguards, the company faces a steep uphill battle regarding public perception. Meta’s long history of privacy litigation—including the Cambridge Analytica scandal and multiple FTC settlements—has created a legacy of skepticism. While the company provides technical documentation to reassure users, critics point to a track record of failing to protect minors and mishandling user data. To encourage adoption, Meta is offering a free tier alongside paid subscriptions, starting at $20 per month for the Power plan and reaching $100 per month for the Maximum plan. Whether the convenience of an autonomous assistant can outweigh deep-seated concerns about Meta’s data stewardship remains the central question for the product’s future.
