MacGregor to equip four new international research vessels

Four upcoming oceanographic research vessels, destined for duty with German and Indian government agencies, will feature specialized deck machinery from MacGregor. The Swedish supplier secured the contracts throughout 2026, with the full suite of handling equipment and cranes slated for delivery between 2027 and 2029.

The project encompasses two vessels being built by GONDAN Shipbuilders in Spain for the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, alongside two ships under construction at Titagarh Naval Systems Limited in India for the Geological Survey of India. These vessels are designed to navigate harsh marine environments to support climate tracking and biodiversity monitoring.

MacGregor’s scope of supply is comprehensive, covering CTD winches, survey boat davits, stern A-frames, and ROV telescope booms. According to project stakeholders, the decision to partner with MacGregor was driven by the manufacturer’s history of integrating complex handling systems for scientific missions. Fernando González of GONDAN Shipbuilders and Cmd. Sanjay Chopra of Titagarh Naval Systems both emphasized the necessity for reliable, high-performance equipment to ensure the operational success of these specialized research platforms.
