By leveraging a book-and-claim system, the initiative allows these corporations to purchase Environmental Attribute Certificates directly from green ammonia producers. This mechanism provides the revenue certainty required to move projects from the announcement phase to operational reality, shielding companies from the price volatility associated with fossil-based fertilizers.

New Alliance Aims to Decarbonize Fertilizer Through Green Ammonia
Fertilizer manufacturing generates roughly 1.2 gigatons of CO2e annually, yet the transition to low-carbon production remains stalled by a lack of bankable demand. To bridge this gap, the Center for Green Market Activation, RMI, and 3Degrees have launched the Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance to aggregate corporate procurement power.
Kim Carnahan, CEO of the Center for Green Market Activation, noted that no single company can scale this market independently. By pooling demand, the alliance creates a credible signal for investors and developers. The program complements existing efforts like the Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance, which focuses on retrofitting current infrastructure. Participants in the new initiative will begin their first pilot procurement in the fourth quarter of 2026, aiming to establish a sustainable market for renewable-powered fertilizer production.
