Katie Dauson Captures Electric Romance in New Single Fresh Sugar

Richmond Hill singer-songwriter Katie Dauson marks a shift toward pure, high-energy balladry with her latest release, Fresh Sugar. Inspired by a spontaneous moment in her family home, the track distills the intensity of new love into a country-rock anthem that trades complex metaphors for raw, melodic impact.

The song arrived with sudden clarity on her father’s birthday, triggered by the vintage sounds of a Raspberries record spinning on vinyl. Dauson drafted the track in her family living room, capturing a sense of immediacy that defines the final studio version. Recorded at Cleveland Sound Lab in Vaughan, Ontario, under the guidance of producer James Nickle, the single features Dauson on rhythm guitar and showcases her ability to blend disparate influences—ranging from surf rock to bluegrass—into a cohesive, driving sound.

Her journey to the recording booth remains unconventional. Before pursuing music, Dauson studied physics and astronomy at York University, working at the David Dunlap Observatory alongside Dr. Tom Bolton, the astronomer credited with identifying the first black hole. A health crisis shifted her trajectory, leading her to an open mic night where a performance of her original song, Virtual Sky, signaled a permanent change in career path. Dauson will debut the new material live on October 23, 2026, at the El Mocambo Tavern in Toronto, backed by a full ensemble including a dedicated horn section.
