Automattic board dissolved following failed attempt to oust Matt Mullenweg

The internal conflict reached a boiling point last week when the board attempted to sideline Mullenweg. Following his swift return to the helm—a move the company claims lasted just over 33 hours—the board members responsible for the ouster were dismissed. Among those exiting is Toni Schneider, a former CEO and current leader at Bluesky, who has already scrubbed mentions of his board role from his personal website. LinkedIn records indicate that Sue Decker, who joined in 2020, has also concluded her tenure, alongside Gen. Ann Dunwoody.

While Automattic remains tight-lipped regarding the specifics of the transition, a spokesperson confirmed the departures while asserting that the company now operates with a board fully aligned with Mullenweg’s vision. The turmoil coincides with a heated legal battle between Automattic and hosting provider WP Engine. Mullenweg has accused the firm of trademark infringement and insufficient financial contributions to the open-source project. Conversely, WP Engine has leveled serious allegations against the CEO, including claims of evidence destruction across encrypted messaging platforms. With the board now reconstituted, the company is expected to formalize the new leadership arrangement early this week.
