Waymo Launches Autonomous Taxi Service in Las Vegas
Las Vegas has become the 15th market for Waymo, as the Alphabet-owned company begins deploying its Ojai minivan fleet to the public. Following regulatory approval from the Nevada Transportation Authority, the service is now available on a limited, invite-only basis across the Strip and the surrounding Boulder Junction area.
Nevada regulators have authorized a significant increase in autonomous traffic, granting permits for up to 8,000 robotaxis across Clark County over the next year. Waymo holds approval for 1,000 vehicles, while Tesla is permitted for 5,000 and Uber for 1,000. Despite these high ceilings, industry experts remain skeptical that full capacity will be reached immediately. Tesla engineer Eric Early noted in August that the company would consider 2,500 units a successful deployment target for the coming year.
