Driving 794 miles from Wolfsburg to Vienna on a single charge, Volkswagen’s new Mission Efficiency prototype has achieved a staggering 279 MPGe. The teardrop-shaped concept, which relies on technology from the ID. Polo, proves that extreme aerodynamics can push electric range far beyond current production standards.

Design compromises were necessary to reach these figures. The rear seating is restricted to passengers under 5-foot-3, and the tight wheel arches prioritize aerodynamics over ride comfort. Inside, the cabin favors minimalism, borrowing a concept from startup Slate Auto by omitting a traditional infotainment system in favor of a portable Bluetooth speaker. Despite adding solar cells to the roof and trunk to provide an extra 18 miles of range under ideal conditions, Volkswagen has not confirmed a production timeline. However, the company’s history with the limited-run XL1 suggests these experiments often serve as high-end benchmarks for future engineering.
