VPN.com CEO Warns AI Cyber Threats Could Cost Firms $3 Trillion

Global corporations face a massive financial reckoning as artificial intelligence accelerates the speed and scale of digital attacks. Michael Gargiulo, CEO of VPN.com, argues that current estimates of cybersecurity debt are vastly understated, potentially reaching $3 trillion once companies factor in the vulnerability of their entire digital footprint.

While Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora recently estimated global cybersecurity debt at $1 trillion, Gargiulo contends that figure ignores the ballooning complexity of modern infrastructure. As firms scramble to defend cloud environments, AI-driven agents, and disparate hardware, the cost of securing these assets is climbing exponentially. Gargiulo emphasizes that the perimeter now extends far beyond traditional firewalls to include every domain, endpoint, and browser access point that a brand utilizes to maintain customer trust.

This shift is particularly urgent as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) prepares to roll out new generic top-level domains. With attackers leveraging AI to automate impersonation and phishing, a fragmented approach to domain management creates an open door for exploitation. VPN.com urges executives to stop viewing domain names as simple website addresses and start treating them as critical brand security assets. Protecting these digital gateways, alongside clean IP space and defensive registrations, is no longer a peripheral IT task but a vital boardroom priority to prevent catastrophic brand damage.
