New Jersey Launches Digital Peer Support for Rural Youth

In rural New Jersey, where mental health resources often vanish after office hours, a new partnership between the state health department and the technology firm Somethings is bridging the gap. The initiative provides text-based peer support to youth ages 13–26, specifically targeting those struggling during evening hours.

New Jersey Launches Digital Peer Support for Rural Youth

The program functions as a digital front door for adolescents who frequently encounter long waitlists or lack reliable transportation to traditional clinics. By utilizing a HIPAA-compliant app designed to operate in low-bandwidth environments, the platform connects users with Certified Peer Specialists who possess lived experience. These mentors are supported by licensed clinical supervisors, allowing for immediate intervention if a participant displays signs of elevated risk.

This model arrives at a critical juncture for the state, where some rural counties report a provider-to-resident ratio of 1,082 to 1. Between 2019 and 2021, depression-related emergency department visits among New Jersey teens surged by 38 percent. The program aims to curb these trends by serving 1,200 rural youth during the grant period, with an estimated 600 participants experiencing active suicidal ideation upon enrollment. Projections suggest the intervention could save $3.2 million in healthcare costs by diverting non-emergent cases away from emergency rooms.

Beyond immediate care, the initiative serves as a localized workforce project. Somethings is hiring 40 young adults from these rural areas to serve as peer mentors, reinvesting more than half of the program's costs directly back into the communities through wages. Since launching across all 11 eligible rural counties, the platform has already supported over 300 individuals.
