Doc Watkins Brings His Jazz Supper Club Concept to Chicago's Lincoln Park

Chicago’s storied jazz scene will welcome a newcomer in March 2027 when pianist and entrepreneur Doc Watkins opens his latest venture at the NEWCITY complex in Lincoln Park. Occupying the former Yard House space, the venue aims to blend high-end dining with live performance, marking Watkins' first expansion into the Midwest.

Watkins, already established with Jazz, TX in San Antonio and Doc’s Jazz Club in Houston, views the Chicago project as a tribute to the city’s deep musical roots rather than a generic national rollout. He emphasizes that the goal is to integrate into the local tradition, creating a destination where live music and culinary excellence share equal billing. To execute this, chef Matt Fanella will helm the kitchen, while general manager Nick DeFina oversees the guest experience, ensuring the club maintains the 'Fine Jazz, Serious Hospitality' philosophy that defines Watkins' previous locations.

The venture arrives as Watkins celebrates a decade in the industry, a journey he recently chronicled in his book, Jazz, TX: A Love Letter to Live Music, Community, and the Little Club That Could. By transforming a large, familiar restaurant footprint into an intimate jazz club, Watkins hopes to replicate the communal experience he believes cannot be captured through digital streaming. The club is designed to attract both dedicated jazz aficionados and casual diners looking for a distinct night out in the Near North Side area.
