Journalists and Legal Experts Convene to Address Press Freedom Crisis

The United States has plummeted to 64th in global press freedom rankings, a historic low that underscores a volatile era for the Fourth Estate. On September 17, the Speak Up for Justice forum will bring together reporters and constitutional scholars to confront the systemic threats challenging the public's right to know.

Journalists and Legal Experts Convene to Address Press Freedom Crisis

The virtual event, titled "The First Amendment Under Pressure: Journalism, Courts & Public Trust," tackles an environment where journalists face simultaneous crises, ranging from restricted access to retaliatory firings and invasive legal investigations. While presidential friction with the media is a historical constant, participants argue that the current velocity and breadth of these pressures represent a distinct departure from previous norms.

Attorney Paul Kiesel, founder of the movement, emphasizes that these attacks reach beyond newsroom operations. When reporters are silenced, the broader democratic mechanism of accountability suffers. The discussion will pay particular attention to the rising tide of gendered harassment and intimidation targeting women journalists, which frequently crosses the threshold from professional criticism into personal safety threats.

Scheduled for 9:00 a.m. PT, the panel features experts including The Atlantic's Quinta Jurecic, IWMF president Elisa Lees Muñoz, and Stephanie Sugars of the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. The forum seeks to move beyond diagnostic assessments to explore the specific roles that courts and public oversight must play in safeguarding an independent press.
