Georgia Power Launches 128 MW Battery Storage at Robins Air Force Base

A new 128-megawatt battery energy storage system is now active near Warner Robins, Georgia, marking a critical step in the state’s efforts to bolster grid reliability. By pairing stored renewable energy with the existing solar facility, the project provides four hours of discharge capacity to meet peak electricity demand.

The Robins Battery Facility represents a collaboration between Georgia Power, local officials, and leadership from Robins Air Force Base. Rick Anderson, senior vice president at Georgia Power, noted that the facility allows the grid to capture renewable power during off-peak hours and release it when customer demand spikes, such as during cold winter mornings. Engineering firm Burns & McDonnell served as the lead contractor, completing the construction on schedule as part of the state’s broader 2023 Integrated Resource Plan.

This site is the latest in a rapid expansion of energy storage across Georgia. With facilities already operational in Cherokee and Lowndes counties, the company is moving toward a total capacity of over 3,000 MW from battery projects currently approved by the Public Service Commission. Future sites, including those at Plants Bowen and Wansley, are slated to integrate with existing substations to maximize efficiency as the state manages significant economic and population growth.
