From the compromise of federal surveillance networks to the mass exposure of personal identification, this year has seen hackers move beyond mere data theft toward active, destructive warfare.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) remains at the center of a potential national security catastrophe. Whistleblowers allege that the agency uploaded a live copy of the Social Security database—containing the personal information of most living Americans—to an unsecured server. Congressional investigators warn this could be the largest data breach in U.S. history, though the full extent of the exposure remains shrouded in legal disputes.

Simultaneously, critical infrastructure has become a primary target. Iranian-linked operatives have hit over 100 U.S. water providers, while Russian hackers continue to disrupt European energy grids. These attacks, which have caused real-world physical damage including water spills and thermal plant outages, signal a dangerous evolution in hybrid warfare. Private sector giants have fared no better: companies like Klue, Instructure, and Hasbro have suffered massive disruptions, with many firms opting to pay ransoms to regain control of their systems after failing to secure basic credentials or falling for voice-phishing campaigns.

Even the tech sector’s own tools have been turned against users. Meta’s AI chatbot was exploited to hijack tens of thousands of Instagram accounts, while the software supply chain—including tools from Bitwarden and OpenAI—was compromised to plant malware in developer environments. As identity-checking services like IDScan suffer breaches exposing 150 million driver’s licenses, the push for mandatory age-verification and digital IDs faces a reckoning: the very systems designed to verify identity are now the primary engines of mass identity theft.
