Comedian Brad Bonar Jr. Brings Suicide Prevention Tour to Military Bases
“There are so many steps to dealing with depression. The first is to talk about it,” says comedian Brad Bonar Jr. Throughout September, his nonprofit, 1° of Separation, is deploying an unconventional, comedy-driven suicide prevention program across 11 states, targeting military installations and local communities to bridge the gap in mental health support.
This month’s tour schedule includes 16 events spanning locations from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia, and reaching as far as Honolulu, Hawaii. Bonar emphasizes that the primary "first responders" to a mental health crisis are rarely clinicians, but rather the friends and colleagues standing nearby. By teaching these everyday individuals how to listen and when to seek professional help, 1° of Separation seeks to turn abstract awareness into immediate, actionable intervention.
