The Invisible Manager: Why AI is Widening the Workplace Perception Gap

A 62% majority of managers report higher engagement levels over the past year, yet their subordinates largely disagree. New research from the American Management Association highlights a deepening disconnect, suggesting that while managers are increasingly occupied with complex, AI-driven cognitive tasks, their staff continues to prioritize traditional, visible forms of support.

The Invisible Manager: Why AI is Widening the Workplace Perception Gap

The report, titled The New Management Reality: AI, Engagement, and the Invisible Work of Managers, surveyed 1,088 professionals to track how artificial intelligence is reshaping leadership. While managers feel they are working harder—often by reviewing AI-assisted output and navigating uncertainty—51% of employees perceive no change in engagement, and 20% report a decline. This friction stems from a fundamental mismatch in definitions: employees equate engagement with clear communication, active listening, and hands-on coaching, whereas managers are pivoting toward behind-the-scenes problem solving.

AI is accelerating this trend, with 41% of managers noting that the technology has intensified productivity expectations. As leaders shift focus toward evaluating AI-generated data and exercising human judgment, the administrative "heavy lifting" is increasingly obscured from the team. AMA President and CEO Manny Avramidis notes that the nature of management is becoming less visible as organizations grow more complex. To bridge this divide, firms must encourage managers to be more transparent about their decision-making processes and the reasoning behind their priorities. Organizations that fail to balance AI implementation with explicit, human-centered communication risk a continued erosion of trust between leadership and their teams.
