Missouri American Water Awards $50,000 to Local Fire Departments

Since the initiative launched in 2016, the utility has distributed approximately 380 grants to emergency response organizations. Company president Rich Svindland noted that the funding acknowledges the essential link between reliable water infrastructure and fire protection. Beyond direct grants, the company is investing $510 million in 2026 to upgrade water mains and improve flow capacity, while maintaining more than 44,000 fire hydrants within its service area.

For local departments, these funds provide a vital bridge for hardware maintenance. Neosho Fire Chief Aaron Houk explained that his department will use the grant to replace aging radio batteries that date back to 2018. This ensures that firefighters retain reliable communication lines during active emergency scenes while the department works toward long-term budget adjustments.
