PBS Western Reserve and Ideastream Public Media to Merge

Facing a $4 million shortfall in federal funding, PBS Western Reserve and Ideastream Public Media have agreed to merge, creating a unified public media entity. The deal, announced Tuesday, aims to secure the future of local news, educational programming, and cultural services for four million people across Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

The boards of both organizations finalized the agreement following a due diligence period prompted by the July 2025 elimination of Corporation for Public Broadcasting grants and declining state-level support. By consolidating operations, the entities intend to pool resources and stabilize their financial outlook without reducing their workforce. No layoffs are planned, and both existing boards will merge to maintain regional representation.

Kevin Martin, who has led Ideastream Public Media since 2017, will continue as president and CEO of the combined organization, which will operate under the Ideastream brand. Natalie Pillsbury, president and CEO of PBS Western Reserve, is set to transition into the role of chief content officer, overseeing expanded programming strategies. Current broadcast operations, including television stations WVIZ, WNEO, and WEAO, as well as radio outlets WKSU, WCLV, and JazzNEO, will continue their schedules without interruption while the firms await FCC license transfer approval.
