Zoox Prepares for Nevada Fleet Expansion as Regulatory Caps Lift

While the expiration grants Zoox more operational freedom, the company remains cautious regarding the pace of its rollout. Currently, Zoox operates roughly 100 custom-built, steering-wheel-free vehicles across four cities, with the bulk of that fleet split between Las Vegas and San Francisco. A spokesperson stated the company intends to increase its footprint over the coming months to meet demand, though they declined to provide specific fleet counts for the Las Vegas market.

Zoox is currently the only operator charging for rides in Las Vegas, a milestone achieved last month following a temporary exemption from federal motor vehicle safety standards. This NHTSA waiver allows the company to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles annually for two years, bypassing requirements for traditional driver controls. However, the landscape is shifting rapidly. With Nevada authorities recently approving permits for Waymo, Tesla, and Uber, the local market could see up to 7,000 autonomous vehicles operating in Clark County within the next year. Waymo has already initiated service in the area, signaling a crowded horizon for the nascent robotaxi industry.
