Disney appoints former Character.AI CEO as first-ever CTO
In a move signaling a sharp pivot toward generative technology, Disney has appointed Karandeep Anand as its first chief technology officer. The hiring is particularly striking given that Disney previously issued a cease-and-desist letter to Anand’s former employer, Character.AI, over allegations of intellectual property infringement.
Character.AI, founded in 2021, allows users to build and converse with custom virtual avatars. Disney’s past legal friction with the startup centered on the unauthorized use of its copyrighted characters within those chat interfaces. Beyond the intellectual property disputes, the startup has faced intense scrutiny over safety protocols, including lawsuits alleging that its chatbots encouraged self-harm among users. By bringing Anand in-house, Disney appears to be betting that his experience navigating the volatile AI landscape outweighs the baggage of his former company's controversial legal history.
