Fluxnium Raises $7 Million to Harvest Uranium from Seawater

Fluxnium, a startup aiming to shift uranium production from terrestrial mines to the ocean, has secured $7 million in seed funding. Led by Congruent Ventures, the round includes backing from Constellation Technology Ventures and Active Impact Investments to scale technology that passively adsorbs uranium from seawater using specialized fibers.

The company’s approach centers on high-surface-area fibers developed in collaboration with a U.S. national laboratory. These fibers are deployed on offshore infrastructure similar to existing seaweed or mussel farms, capturing dissolved uranium as water flows through them. By bypassing traditional mining, the firm aims to eliminate common environmental hurdles like tailings management and groundwater contamination while creating a scalable, domestic supply chain for nuclear fuel.

CEO Jeff Green stated that the technology is projected to compete with the cost of conventional mining. With global nuclear energy capacity expected to grow significantly over the next 15 years, the company positions its offshore model as a faster alternative to the lengthy permitting and capital-intensive development cycles required for new mines. The new capital will be used to advance pilot testing and commercialize the platform.
