The site reached this stage after the Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office verified that previous environmental and safety deficiencies had been resolved. Construction of the cell factory began in the summer of 2023, following the project's initial announcement in August 2022. Since autumn 2024, the facility has already been active in the production of battery modules, recording a total output of 537,000 units to date.

CATL Launches Trial Battery Cell Production in Debrecen
Trial production at CATL’s Debrecen facility began on September 22, marking a major milestone for the Chinese battery giant’s European expansion. The plant, designed to serve leading continental automakers, is currently validating manufacturing processes on its first two production lines following the receipt of all necessary regulatory permits.
Once fully operational, the Debrecen location is set to become CATL’s largest manufacturing hub outside of China, boasting an eventual capacity of 100 GWh. The company emphasized that it will maintain proactive monitoring of environmental and safety standards throughout the trial period, sharing regular updates with Hungarian authorities. This investment is positioned to integrate deeply into the European electric vehicle supply chain, supporting the regional production capacity established by major European car manufacturers.
