The data reveals that only 25% of employees report feeling comfortable with AI integration in payroll, a stark contrast to the nearly equal percentage who feel "very uncomfortable." These results mirror trends from 2024, when similar surveys showed deep-seated anxiety regarding AI’s role in both pay calculations and personal payroll inquiries.

Employees Remain Skeptical of AI in Payroll Systems
Nearly half of American workers harbor significant reservations about artificial intelligence managing their compensation, according to PayrollOrg’s 2026 "Getting Paid In America" survey. Among 9,451 respondents, 46% expressed discomfort with AI-driven payroll processes, highlighting a persistent trust gap between organizational adoption and employee sentiment.

Patrick Tripp, senior director of product marketing at UKG, suggests that while businesses are shifting toward AI transformation, payroll departments remain in a cautious pilot phase. Although 25% of organizations have integrated AI experiments into production, only 11% of payroll teams have fully adopted these features. According to Dan Maddux, executive director of PayrollOrg, the burden falls on leadership to foster transparency and bridge the divide between new technological capabilities and the workforce's need for financial accuracy. As regulatory complexity grows, the challenge for companies lies in evolving payroll systems without sacrificing the trust of their employees.
