Clarkson University Secures Inaugural Carnegie Sustainability Honor

The university’s sustainability mission is anchored by the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, which serves as a central hub for interdisciplinary work. Research initiatives currently span high-impact areas, including PFAS destruction, advanced material processing, and air quality monitoring. These efforts frequently bridge the gap between academic theory and commercial application, exemplified by student-led ventures like KLAW Industries, which repurposes waste glass for sustainable concrete production.

Beyond the laboratory, the institution emphasizes practical application through community-based learning. Faculty and students have collaborated with the Village of Potsdam on critical stormwater infrastructure and maintained a long-standing partnership with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe to monitor air quality in Akwesasne. By aligning its operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Clarkson integrates economic opportunity and community resilience into its institutional framework.

Timothy F.C. Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, noted that this inaugural cohort establishes the standard for the new classification. Clarkson will retain this designation through 2033, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to addressing real-world environmental challenges.
