The demonstration features Lightera’s 4-core, 125 µm clad diameter fiber with a 40 µm pitch, adhering to ITU-T G.657.A2 standards. By enabling multiple optical channels within a single strand, this design reduces total fiber counts by 75 percent. According to John George, Senior Director of Global Business Development at Lightera, this reduction in physical footprint translates to a fourfold improvement in weight and space efficiency compared to conventional single-mode fiber.

Lightera Showcases Multicore Fiber at ECOC 2026 Interoperability Demo
At the ECOC 2026 exhibition in Malaga, Lightera is showcasing its multicore fiber technology within the OIF multi-vendor interoperability demonstration. The display highlights the practical potential of Space Division Multiplexing, utilizing Lightera’s specialized fiber to increase transmission density and support the evolving capacity demands of modern data center networks.

Lightera is participating in both 500-meter and 50-kilometer transmission tests at stand 2126. These efforts are part of a broader industry push to prove that multicore solutions can function reliably in multi-vendor environments. Beyond fiber design, the company is actively developing the necessary splicing and connectivity ecosystems required to move this technology from controlled demonstrations into commercial network deployment.
