Amway CEO Michael Nelson Doubles Down on Long-Term China Strategy

Since its initial entry in 1992, Amway has transformed its Chinese footprint into a cornerstone of its global operations. The company’s Guangzhou facility now serves as its largest production hub worldwide, supplying over 50 global markets and accounting for 55 percent of its total output value. Nelson attributes this sustained growth to a strategy of deep localization, spanning everything from research and development to after-sales services.

Looking toward the implementation of China's 15th Five-Year Plan, Nelson pointed to the government’s "Healthy China" initiative as a primary driver for future capital allocation. He plans to prioritize investments in digital infrastructure, healthcare, and supply chain optimization to align with shifting consumer demands. Beyond manufacturing, the company is scaling organic farming efforts, evidenced by its site in Pengzhou, Sichuan province.

Despite fluctuating geopolitical climates, Nelson remains optimistic about U.S.-China business relations. He emphasizes that the stability provided by China’s long-term development planning allows for the consistency required to foster innovation. By treating the region as a vital laboratory for global strategy rather than just a sales territory, Amway aims to leverage the country’s entrepreneurial energy to refine its business model for years to come.
