Minnesota Startup SotaFlame Debuts Electric Fireplaces with Real Oak Logs

Minnesota-based SotaFlame is launching its national retail presence this month, moving away from plastic aesthetics by integrating hand-charred, kiln-dried oak logs into its new electric fireplace line. The company aims to bridge the gap between convenient electric heating and the authentic look of traditional wood-burning hearths.

Minnesota Startup SotaFlame Debuts Electric Fireplaces with Real Oak Logs

The Nordeast Linear Electric Fireplace serves as the brand’s flagship product, named in homage to a historic Minneapolis neighborhood. Founders Joe Kuefler and Paul Kilburg, both veterans of the fireplace industry, spent nearly twenty years observing the limitations of existing electric models before launching the company. Their design philosophy focuses on "intentionality," prioritizing hidden heat vents and a reflective flame panel to maintain a seamless visual profile.

Beyond the physical hardware, the units feature LiveEmber dynamic motion technology and integrated ambient soundscapes to replicate the sensory experience of a natural fire. These features address a common industry critique: that electric fireplaces often lose their aesthetic appeal when the heating element is powered down. By incorporating real wood elements, the founders intend to ensure the units remain a coherent piece of interior design even when not in use.

As modern construction trends shift toward simpler, vent-free installations, the demand for electric alternatives continues to rise among homeowners and contractors. The Nordeast series is currently available via the company’s website and Amazon, with pricing starting at $1,399. The brand plans to expand its catalog later this fall with the introduction of the Hyland series, which will focus on a slim-profile linear form factor.
