Trump Administration Strips 750,000 from ACA Coverage

The Trump administration triggered widespread outcry Tuesday after announcing the removal of at least 750,000 Americans from Affordable Care Act plans, citing alleged enrollment fraud. Vice President JD Vance and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz framed the move as a $2.2 billion taxpayer saving, though critics warn many legitimate enrollees are losing coverage.

Health policy experts and advocacy groups expressed deep skepticism regarding the criteria used for the mass disenrollment. While acknowledging that some brokers have historically manipulated enrollment for commissions, analysts noted that the administration’s primary indicator for fraud—a failure to file a claim—is common among healthy individuals who simply do not require medical services in a given year.

“Rather than addressing rising healthcare costs, the administration is forcing more Americans to become uninsured, live sicker, die younger, and risk being one emergency away from financial ruin,” said Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA. The administration signaled that this purge could expand, with officials currently scrutinizing 400,000 additional enrollees. This latest action follows a broader trend during the current term, during which an estimated 10 million people have lost insurance coverage amid reduced Medicaid funding and expiring subsidies. With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, healthcare costs remain a central concern for voters, and political organizations like MoveOn have labeled the administration’s decision a deliberate betrayal of working families.
