Palestinian Activist Leqaa Kordia Released After Year in ICE Detention

Kordia’s ordeal began last March when she was arrested during a routine ICE check-in and transferred to the Prairieland Detention Center. Her supporters, including Amnesty International USA and the Texas Civil Rights Project, argue that her prolonged confinement served as retaliation for her vocal advocacy regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where she has reportedly lost nearly 200 relatives.

While her cousin Hamzah Abushaban described the release as a powerful milestone for their family, her attorneys emphasize that the battle is far from over. Department of Homeland Security officials had opposed her bond, and uncertainty remains regarding potential future government appeals. Legal representatives from the CLEAR project and Muslim Advocates maintain that Kordia’s detention was an unjust abuse of power, noting that many currently held in the system—where the population has surged to 70,000—lack criminal records.
