Developing autonomous technology has long required a prohibitive investment in hardware and simulation infrastructure. To bridge this gap, TIER IV provided a standardized platform—centered on the Autoware open-source stack—that served as the foundation for the 2026 Autonomous Driving AI Challenge. The initiative supported 240 teams, allowing participants to bypass the tedious task of building a system from scratch and instead focus on refining AI models and driving logic.
The reference design integrates a TOM'S EV racing kart with GNSS positioning, inertial measurement units, and custom onboard computing. Beyond the hardware, TIER IV bundled the release with a simulation environment and web-based evaluation tools. This setup allowed competitors to iterate on their software in a virtual space before deploying it to real-world racing conditions during the challenge's final rounds on September 19-20.
