Envision Energy Launches 16.7 MW Offshore Turbine for High-Wind Markets

In a push to optimize offshore wind economics, Envision Energy has unveiled the EN-252/16.7 turbine. Engineered specifically for high-wind environments, the 16.7 MW system aims to improve project returns by boosting energy production while simultaneously reducing the total number of turbines required for large-scale farm developments.

The new turbine builds on the company’s existing Model Z platform, leveraging years of operational data and component validation. By increasing rated power and optimizing the swept-area-to-power ratio, the EN-252/16.7 is projected to lift annual energy production by 1% to 2% in gigawatt-scale projects. This gain allows developers to decrease turbine counts by roughly 10%, driving an estimated 2% to 4% reduction in the levelized cost of energy.

Christian Schrimpf, Executive Vice President of Offshore Wind at Envision, emphasized that the focus has shifted beyond mere scale to the practical translation of capacity into project reliability. To ensure longevity, the turbine undergoes rigorous testing, including 600 hours of accelerated life cycle assessments for the drivetrain. The system is also built to withstand extreme weather, capable of enduring 10-minute average wind speeds of 58.5 m/s and gusts reaching 82 m/s.

Operational resilience is managed through the company’s AI-driven Galileo system, which has been deployed across 20,000 turbines since 2020. By utilizing 30 distinct functional models, the software identifies potential faults one to six months in advance, allowing for proactive maintenance that lowers long-term operating expenses. Beyond monitoring, the turbine features grid-forming control and black-start capabilities, ensuring power continuity even when external grid connections are disrupted.
