Corporate Gifting: Why Thoughtfulness Outperforms Budget

More than half of corporate gift recipients would prefer to receive nothing at all rather than a generic item, according to new research from Packed with Purpose and The Harris Poll. The findings suggest that companies spending billions on gifts often miss the mark by prioritizing cost over genuine impact.

Corporate Gifting: Why Thoughtfulness Outperforms Budget

The 2026 State of Corporate Gifting Report reveals that 85% of recipients value the intent behind a gift more than its price tag. When companies default to generic items, they risk damaging professional relationships; 15% of respondents reported receiving gifts so impersonal they felt insulted. Conversely, when a gift is perceived as thoughtful, nearly 90% of recipients report a more positive view of the sender.

Social impact emerged as the most effective strategy for building loyalty. A gift tied to a charitable cause is 3.2 times more likely to strengthen a business relationship than a standard gift. This trend holds across demographics, with at least 70% of respondents in every age group indicating they favor companies that integrate social purpose into their gifting. For organizations, the data indicates that shifting focus from high-cost inventory to meaningful, mission-driven items is a more reliable way to drive retention and referrals.
