Cellid and Megane Top Partner to Bring AR Glasses to Mainstream Retail

Tokyo-based tech developer Cellid Inc. is joining forces with optical retail giant Megane Top to transition augmented reality hardware from a niche enthusiast tool into everyday eyewear. The partnership leverages Megane Top’s extensive retail footprint to commercialize new AR products starting with a crowdfunding launch this October.

The collaboration targets the integration of Cellid’s proprietary waveguide optical displays with the practical design standards of conventional glasses. Megane Top, which operates the nationwide Megane Ichiba chain, intends to manage the product development and sales infrastructure, while Cellid provides the core spatial recognition engines and hardware modules. The companies plan to open preorders for their first joint device on the GREEN FUNDING platform on October 23, 2026.

For Cellid, the deal addresses the primary hurdle facing current AR hardware: the gap between high-end optics and consumer-grade comfort. By aligning with an established retailer, the firms aim to optimize weight, fit, and aesthetic appeal to ensure mass-market adoption. Following the initial crowdfunding campaign, the devices will reach consumers through Megane Top’s network of over 1,000 stores across Japan, signaling a shift toward treating AR hardware as standard optical equipment rather than specialized electronic gear.
