The pharmaceutical giant plans to close the access gap by integrating resource-limited settings into its clinical development, registration, and distribution strategies. Currently, four out of five adults with diabetes and seven out of ten adults with obesity reside in these regions, yet they often face decades of delay before receiving access to medical innovations available elsewhere. CEO David A. Ricks noted that the company intends to leverage medicines like the oral treatment Foundayo—which does not require complex cold-chain storage—to facilitate broader distribution across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

Eli Lilly targets global parity for diabetes and obesity treatment
Eli Lilly and Company has launched the Change the Course Commitment, a health initiative aiming to achieve equal treatment rates for diabetes and obesity in low- and middle-income countries compared to high-income nations by 2040, addressing a current disparity where only one in four patients in poorer regions can access these therapies.

This initiative builds on the success of the Lilly 30x30 program, which concluded five years ahead of schedule after reaching 40 million people. To ensure accountability, the company will report its progress on this new goal through its annual sustainability disclosures. The strategy focuses on three core pillars: tailoring drug development for diverse infrastructure, accelerating regulatory approvals in emerging markets, and strengthening primary health systems through partnerships with global health organizations and community health workers.
