Compass Group Shifts School Dining Strategy to Boost Student Engagement

As campuses welcome students back this fall, Compass Group North America is repositioning its dining services from simple meal preparation to a core component of student life. By integrating wellness programs and community-building events, the company aims to support student wellbeing and campus connection across its vast network of institutions.

Compass Group Shifts School Dining Strategy to Boost Student Engagement

Dennis Hogan, CEO of Compass Education, describes dining as a daily touchpoint capable of shaping how students engage with their school community. To meet these changing expectations, the company is rolling out tailored programming across its education subsidiaries. Chartwells Higher Education has launched its 2026 Fall Flavor Forecast alongside a new engagement platform, Milestones, which connects food service to significant moments in the college experience.

In the K-12 sector, Chartwells has introduced initiatives like Nutrition: Game On and Pizza Daze to transform cafeterias into hubs for culinary exploration and social interaction. Meanwhile, the Bon Appétit Management Company continues its long-running Fellows Program, deploying sustainability educators to campuses to promote food recovery and environmental awareness among students.

These efforts reflect a broader shift in how educational institutions view catering services. Rather than functioning solely as a basic utility, campus dining is increasingly utilized as a tool to foster belonging and support health. With operations spanning over 320 colleges and 750 school districts, Compass Group is leveraging its national scale to implement these localized, experience-driven strategies.
