Northwestern Mutual Targets Ultra-Wealthy with New Family Office Unit

With over 100,000 U.S. households now commanding net worths exceeding $50 million, Northwestern Mutual is launching a dedicated Family Office Services division. The move aims to consolidate legal, tax, and legacy planning for the ultra-wealthy, addressing a growing market frustration where affluent families struggle to coordinate fragmented financial advice.

The initiative deploys a team of 40 in-house specialists to support advisors nationwide, acting as a single point of accountability for clients with at least $50 million in assets. By embedding these capabilities directly into its existing advisor model, the firm seeks to manage complex financial structures including business interests and philanthropic entities that traditional wealth management often fails to integrate.

This expansion responds to a shift in investor sentiment revealed in the company's 2026 Planning & Progress Study, which found that 52% of high-net-worth individuals believe their current financial planning is inadequate. Many are pivoting toward professional guidance to mitigate risks, such as tax exposure, rather than focusing solely on asset accumulation. John Roberts, chief field officer at Northwestern Mutual, noted that the model allows advisors to function as the central architects of a client's wealth, rather than forcing families to piece together disparate experts on their own.

Northwestern Mutual currently manages over $450 billion in retail client investment assets. The new service is intended to deepen these existing relationships by providing the high-level expertise required to manage multi-generational wealth, marking a strategic push to compete more aggressively in the ultra-high-net-worth segment of the financial services industry.
