Mitria Medical Taps T45 Labs to Fast-Track Heart Valve Therapy

The collaboration aims to push the investigational device through clinical evaluation and regulatory milestones. The Subvalvular Spacer, a nitinol braid implant, addresses the limitations of current edge-to-edge repair techniques by supporting displaced leaflets without compromising the native valve’s opening. This approach is intended to provide a viable alternative for patients whose anatomical conditions make existing transcatheter options unsuitable.

Marwan Berrada-Sounni, who assumes the CEO role while maintaining his leadership at T45 Labs, plans to leverage the incubator's operational model to scale the technology. The device was originally nurtured within the Cleveland Clinic Innovations program, with the first U.S. implantations performed by co-inventors Dr. Samir Kapadia and Dr. Jose Navia under the FDA’s Single Patient Expanded Access Program. Early clinical data has already been presented at major cardiovascular forums, including TCT and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery’s Mitral Conclave, marking a transition from experimental concept to structured clinical development.
