According to executive director Ruchika Nijhara, the intensity of this funding cycle stems from technologies progressing into clinical translation and manufacturing—stages that demand significantly higher investment than initial research. The current awards include 3.08 million dollars for new faculty initiatives, 1.35 million dollars for technology validation, and nearly 400,000 dollars to support commercial product development at firms like SereNeuro Therapeutics.

Maryland Stem Cell Fund Awards $4.8 Million to Regenerative Research
Fifteen researchers and biotechnology firms across Maryland have secured over $4.8 million in grants to accelerate work on conditions ranging from Parkinson’s disease to cardiac arrhythmias. The funding, distributed in the first cycle of fiscal year 2027, highlights a surge in demand for capital as local projects move toward commercialization.
Since the Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006, the fund has distributed over 250 million dollars to more than 770 projects. This latest infusion supports investigators at institutions including the University of Maryland, Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University. The Commission plans to open the next round of applications for the 2027 cycle in late October.
